DB bench press Vs Barbell Benchpress?

What suits you best? We are here to settle the debate of what is more beneficial for you. First we need to look at what you are trying to achieve. If it is pure strength I would highly recommend barbell bench as you can lift more. However if you want to work more muscles I would say DB bench has the upper due to the stabilising aspect of the lift. With a barbell you are fixed in and the bar dictates where it will go. There is only one direction it can go. DB's on the other hand are free moving and depending on your anatomy can move in any direction. If you find the barbell too restricting DB's are for you however it requires a lot more stability to keep the dumbbells from swaying around the place. I recommend you start off with a lighter weight about 60% of your 1RM to get used to the movement at first. Then once your stabiliser muscles in in the shoulders and back are used to it you can progress to your working sets. DB's are also a great addition if you have any imbalances on either side. I particularly like them as they force my right and left side to work as hard as each other. However there is no feeling like smashing a bench press PR on barbell as you load the bar with multiple twenty kilo plates on either side. The sight is impressive to say the least but we are not here with our ego's. They are left at the door. It is up to you at the end of the day to see which one suits your training style
Best of luck with your choice
